"What do you plot against the LORD? He will make a complete end; trouble will not rise up a second time." - Nahum 1:9 (ESV)
Reflection
Out on the trail, you’ve felt it—the moment when the path narrows, the ridge drops off sharply, and you realize one wrong step could end the hike. You plan your route carefully: map out the switchbacks, check the weather, pack the right gear. But sometimes trouble comes anyway—a sudden storm, a washed-out bridge, or an unexpected injury.Life is the same kind of rugged terrain. We men often try to plot our own way—cutting corners at work, nursing resentment at home, chasing quick fixes for deeper struggles, or thinking we can outmaneuver God’s clear direction. Nahum 1:9 is a blunt trail marker from the Lord Himself. He looks at our scheming, our hidden rebellions, our attempts to play God on our own mountain, and He declares: I will make a complete end. Just as a rockslide can seal off an old, dangerous path forever, God sovereignly ends the power of trouble in the lives of those who turn to Him. The enemy’s plans, the weight of past sin, the grip of addiction or pride—none of it gets a second chance to rise when we surrender the trail to the Lord.Hiking reminds us we’re not in control. The mountain doesn’t bend to your will; you must respect it. The same is true with God. He is not some distant trail boss—He is the Creator of every peak and valley. When we stop plotting against Him and start following His lead, He clears the obstacles that once threatened to destroy us.
Application for the Trail
Today’s Hike: Identify one area where you’ve been “plotting your own route” instead of following God’s marked path—maybe in your marriage, integrity, anger, or priorities. Write it down like a trail note, then pray and ask the Lord to make a complete end of it.
Gear Check: What “extra weight” (sin, bitterness, distraction) are you still carrying that God wants to end once and for all? Drop it at His feet.
Summit Mindset: Remember, the God who calms storms and steadies your feet on high places is the same God who defeats every enemy that rises against you.
Prayer
Lord, You are the Maker of every mountain I climb. Forgive me for the times I’ve plotted my own foolish path instead of trusting Yours. Make a complete end to the trouble that has hiked alongside me too long. Clear the trail ahead, steady my steps, and give me the strength of a man who follows the true Guide. I surrender control to You today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Challenge
Take this verse with you on your next hike. Read it at the summit or by a quiet stream. Let the vastness of creation remind you how small your plans are compared to the God who holds the whole trail in His hands. Stay strong on the narrow trail, brother. The Lord has already won the hardest climb.
