Standing at the Crossroads

Scripture:

“Thus says the LORD: ‘Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.’ But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’” — Jeremiah 6:16 (ESV)-----Devotional: The Critical Junction

As an outdoorsman, you know the gravity of standing at a crossroads. Whether it’s a fork in a deer trail or a junction of two fire roads, the choice you make determines the difficulty of the journey, the safety of your route, and ultimately, whether you reach your destination. If you pick the wrong way, you pay for it in wasted energy, lost time, and the anxiety of being off-course.

In Jeremiah 6:16, God finds his people at just such a point. They are standing "by the roads," facing a choice between following the new, appealing shortcuts the world offers and committing to the "ancient paths"—His established ways of life and truth.

The prophet Jeremiah gives the wilderness traveler a timeless instruction for navigating both the moral landscape and the backcountry of life:

Stand and Look: Before moving, you must pause. This is the call to break away from the rush of the world and find clarity. Just as you pull out your compass and topo map to orient yourself at a junction, you are called to halt your forward momentum and evaluate the spiritual terrain.

Ask for the Ancient Paths: The "ancient paths" are defined as "the good way". They are the enduring, time-tested principles of righteousness and obedience that God set down long ago. When the modern path promises ease but delivers exhaustion, the wise outdoorsman seeks out the proven route. You ask for this path through prayer and by searching the Scripture—your divine map.

Walk in it: Knowledge is not enough; survival depends on commitment. The true reward comes when you shoulder your burden and set your feet firmly on the "good way". The moment you commit to this path of obedience, God delivers on His profound promise: you "will find rest for your souls".

The tragedy of Jeremiah's people was their rejection: "We will not walk in it". They chose restlessness and struggle over the peace of God's guidance. Today, let your resolve be different. Choose the path of God's proven truth, and find true soul-rest for the trail ahead.-----Hiking Prayer

Lord of the ancient paths, thank You for providing clear direction in the wilderness of my life. I confess that I often rush through the crossroads, choosing the popular or easy route over Your proven way. Give me the humility to pause, stand still, and truly look at the options before me. Show me the "good way" in Your Word. Strengthen my will to walk in obedience, trusting that only on Your trail will I find the deep and abiding rest my soul needs. Amen.-----Trail Application

The Map Check: Tomorrow, dedicate five minutes to reviewing the map of your day (your planned schedule, priorities, or a specific difficult task). Before you begin, physically point to an item in your workspace that represents a decision point (like a calendar or a task list). Let this action remind you of the Jeremiah 6:16 crossroads. Recite the three steps: Stand and Look, Ask for the Ancient Paths, and Walk in it. Let the search for the "good way" govern the first steps you take.
