Scripture: "He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?" — Micah 6:8 (ESV)
Devotional: Packing the Right Spiritual Gear
In any expedition into the high country, your success is determined by what you carry in your pack. If you carry too much of the wrong gear, you’ll tire before the summit; if you carry too little of the essentials, you’re vulnerable to the elements. Micah 6:8 acts as the ultimate "gear list" for the soul, stripping away the noise of religious performance and highlighting three non-negotiables for the sportsman’s journey.
Consider these three requirements as they apply to the life of the outdoor sportsman:
"Do Justice": The Ethics of the Wild.In the backcountry, justice is about stewardship and "fair chase." It is the commitment to leave no trace, to respect the boundaries of the land, and to act with integrity even when no ranger or warden is watching. To "do justice" means protecting the resources God has provided so the "ancient paths" remain open for those who follow.
"Love Kindness": The Fellowship of the Camp.Kindness (or mercy) is the warmth of the "Golden Hour". On the trail, it looks like sharing your water with a struggling hiker or helping a fellow sportsman haul gear through a difficult thicket. It is the unearned grace that makes the community of the outdoors beautiful. Just as we seek "God’s face to shine upon us," we are called to let our kindness shine on our companions.
"Walk Humbly": The Altitude of the Heart. There is nothing like a towering granite peak or a vast desert canyon to remind a person of their smallness. Walking humbly is the recognition that we are not the masters of the wilderness, but guests of the Creator. It is the peace that comes from looking up to the "Ultimate Ranger" and following His lead through the shadowed valleys.
True success for the sportsman isn't measured by the weight of the harvest or the miles logged; it is found in the alignment of your heart with these three spiritual coordinates.

Sportsman’s Prayer
Lord of the Peaks and Valleys, thank You for the wild places that remind me of Your power. As I navigate the terrain of my life today, help me to pack the right essentials. Give me the strength to do what is right, even when it’s the harder climb. Soften my heart to show kindness to every person I meet on the trail. Above all, keep me humble before Your majesty, trusting that You are the only Guide who can lead me to true rest. Amen.
Field Application
The Pack Check: Tomorrow morning, as you prepare for your day, physically touch three items of gear (your boots, your pack, your compass). With each item, recite one part of Micah 6:8.
Boots: "I will do justice."
Pack: "I will love kindness."
Compass: "I will walk humbly with my God."
Let these physical anchors remind you that your spiritual "loadout" is just as vital as your field gear for a successful journey.
